Families who adopt a child internationally can provide the most foundational and critical needs of a child such as love, belonging, and provision on multiple levels. However, inherent in international adoption is the loss of connection to their birth county, culture and people group. This loss is a significant one and is crucial in their identity formation. Families who demonstrate value of their child’s birth culture and make efforts to form connections with that culture help to diminish the loss and access the gains of connection to their birth culture. Mentorship with a native Ethiopian is a phenomenal way families can integrate their child’s birth culture into their family and their child’s life. I am thrilled, as an Ethiopian adoptive mother and therapist working with adoptive families, that an organization to help families establish mentorship relationships exists!
